Flashback: One Direction Donates From WWA Ticket Sales For Cancer Charity

May 16, 2013: imageWhen One Direction announced at a press conference at Wembley Stadium that they were going to have a third world tour called Where We Are, they added their intention that with every ticket sold for the WWA Tour, 50p would be donated to the charity group Stand Up To Cancer. Some estimations at the time of the announcement were the potential for 1D to raise around £200,000 which is a phenomenal amount, but through some clever fundraising prizeo contest Meet&Greet giveaways One Direction was able to raise THREE TIMES that amount to give StandUp2Cancer a donation of over £600,000.

At the conference, Liam Payne spoke for the 1D group explaining their decision for giving back in supporting Stand Up To Cancer saying, “We’re so proud to be supporting Stand Up To Cancer while touring the UK and Ireland. Cancer affects nearly everyone at some point in their lives so we all need to do what we can to bring forwards the day when all cancers are cured.” Liam stated, “Stand Up To Cancer is all about bringing people together as a collective force and we hope our fans will get involved,” he added. “We’d love for One Direction fans to tell us about their support by using the hashtag #1DStandUp.”

The money raised will help fund groundbreaking research specifically designed to have an impact within just a few years, bringing new and kinder treatments to patients sooner. We want to thank them and their fans for their support.”

WHERE THE MONEY GOES:
At Stand Up To Cancer, we pride ourselves on financial transparency. Our mission is to fund collaborative, translational cancer research to bring treatments from the bench to the bedside faster, and save lives now.

Since Stand Up To Cancer was founded in May 2008, over 160 clinical trials have been planned, initiated, or completed by SU2C scientists, in which more than 8,000 patients have participated.

100% of donations received from the public support collaborative cancer research program.

More than two-thirds of this donation came from One Direction WWA ticket sales from the UK and Ireland leg of their tour alone, but an addition third was made up through the more than 10,868 entries from around the world in the prizeo  competition One Direction launched to win an opportunity to meet them backstage at the final gig of their ‘Where We Are’ world tour!

The lucky winner, 14-year-old Alexus from Canada, flew with friend and chaperone to Miami where she met Harry, Zayn, Liam, Niall and Louis backstage. Alexus said later, “I can’t believe that out of nearly 11,000 people, I was the one lucky enough to win the chance to meet One Direction. It’s a dream come true! I will never forget this day. It’s also so great that it’s raised so much for such a good cause.”

It’s truly astounding how much One Direction have given over the years to so many charities. One Direction really lead by example in giving their time and talent to helping others and making a better world.
