In 2013, for Red Nose Day, the telethon TV event held by Comic Relief, One Direction recorded their rendition of One Way or Another, a medley of Blondie’s “One Way or Another (1979) and The Undertones “Teenage Kicks” (1978). The song was produced by Julian Bunetta and John Ryan and was released on February 17, 2013. The song debuted at number 1 in the UK Single charts, making it the third One Direction single to debut at the top of the charts! The song also hit number 1 on iTunes in 63 countries during the first week sale only. It became the fastest selling single of 2013.
On February 20th, the video of One Way or Another was released. In an effort to limit the cost of the production and make sure that all the proceeds from the sale of the single would benefit Comic Relief, One Direction filmed the video themselves on a low budget. The video was shot in Ghana, Tokyo, London, and New York. The video features cheeky/funny scenes of the One Direction guys in a bed, having a shower, hanging out the rooftop of a car and goofing around an airport, among others. Also featured is a cameo from British Prime Minister David Cameron, outside his official residence at 10 Downing Street in London.
The day the music video was released (February 20th 2013), One Direction performed the song for the first time at the Brits awards. The song was also performed at Red Nose Day on March 15th, 2013. Louis’ hair was dyed red that day to show extra support to Comic Relief.
One Direction made 2 million on the sales of One Way or Another, all of which was donated to Comic Relief.
Commenting on One Direction’s huge achievement, the Red Nose Day Twitter account twitted: “A HUGE thanks to @onedirection and all you Directioners who’ve now helped raise a MASSIVE £2million for #RND! You guys rock.“
Niall also tweeted: “We just want to say thank you to our fans for their generosity. They never cease to amaze us. We’re so very proud of our involvement and knowing that this money will make a real difference is the best part of what we do.Please continue to support Comic Relief and do what you can for this incredibly important cause. Love Niall. X.”
