October 10, 2013 Liam Payne was the recipient of the Sons & Daughters Award in a ceremony held in his hometown of Wolverhampton, honoring the achievements of those from the area who have given back to the community. Liam’s award was in honor of his tremendous achievements and global influence!
Accepting the award for him that night were his parents, Geoff and Karen Payne, as Liam was with One Direction in New Zealand on their world tour at the time. He regretted missing the event, and sent a recorded video by his parents to express his heartfelt gratitude for the honor, saying, “I just wanted to say a massive thank you for this. My band has picked up a lot of awards over the past few years, but for me, this is the one I’m definitely most grateful for. Wolverhampton’s my home and it always will be.”
He added, “I want to say a massive thank you to all those people years ago who gave me the opportunities that I needed to get me where I am today, and I wanted to say a massive thank-you to the people that nominated me for this. It’s definitely the most important award. It’s going to take pride on my shelf.” He later tweeted this:
Liam has never forgotten the special people in his hometown whom he states helped him along the way through school and when he performed at various talent competitions, particularly the support they gave him while he competed in X Factor 2 times. An example of Liam’s generosity is pictured below when he and his family visited the Youth Project they have been involved with developing for underprivileged youth of Wolverhampton.
