May 18, 2012: Before heading to the US while on their Take Me Home Tour One Direction surprised a fan they had learned was facing some serious medical procedures battling an aggressive form of cancer. Eight year old Niamh Power was diagnosed with cancer about 18 months prior having already had 4 major operations and was facing her 5th within the week. This surprise visit was arranged by a family friend, Amanda Turner, who contacted Rays Of Sunshine, the charity that grants wishes to seriously and terminally ill children. From Ray of Sunshine website:
“Wishes are as unique as children themselves. They give a child the chance to forget their illness and do something they could only dream of. Wishes make a child feel extra-special and bring them hope and happiness. They also provide families with treasured memories of happy times to look back on.”
One Direction has worked with Rays of Sunshine for a number of years, serving as ambassadors to the charity, supporting them with donated ticket prizes and hosting special meet and greets. After their visit with Niamh at her London hotel, Niall tweeted his picture with her with this message:
“ Met this amazing girl this morning, Niamh! Great morning @raysofsunshine brave girl!”
Niamh’s mum, Marie, spoke of how much this visit boosted her spirits as she was preparing for another serious operation in the following days.
