May 28, 2017: Liam’s debut solo single ‘Strip That Down’ featuring the rapper,Quavo from the hip-hop group Migos’ has been released. ‘Strip That Down’, co-written by Ed Sheeran and Steve Mac has already hit the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Chart and Twitter Top Tracks chart, earning Liam his first chart-topper while launching his solo career, (photo credit of Ed and Liam: Radio Planeta).
Last week, Liam spoke of his experience writing “Strip That Down” with longtime friend, Ed Sheeran, in an BBCRadio1 interview” with Nick Grimshaw: “Honestly, I feel so blessed and honoured that he wanted to write a song for me and I just want to say thank you to him I guess more than anything. It’s amazing, I’m humbled. The fact that he even wanted to bother working with us, spending his time.”
Liam met up with his featured rapper, Quavo, while working in LA. There Liam had been spending time in studio, collaborating with a variety of artists since the band One Direction had gone on hiatus. Quavo’s rap group, Migos, had been recently working with Calvin Harris and Frank Ocean recording ‘Slide’. Quavo, the most influential rapper of the day according to HotNewWhipHop has been recording some solo work of his own- (he recently featured on DJ Khaled’s “I’m The One,” with Chance The Rapper, Lil Wayne and Justin Bieber)- later made plans to collaborate with Liam as a featured rapper for ‘Strip That Down’.
In an interview with the Daily Star, Quavo mentioned that in addition to recording ‘Strip That Down’ he has already shot Liam’s music video with him, due for release soon after the single dropped.
“Me and my boy, Liam, from One Direction, we just shot that. Crazy visuals. Crazy team. Cool guy. Nice guy. It’s going up.”
Liam has indicated in promo radio interviews that his debut album, when it’s finished, will not be all hip-hop nor rap as he is collaborating with a variety of producers and artists for it. Liam’s states that his choice in music to be very different from what his 1D fans are used to him singing. He is striving for his music to be more a cross between Drake and Bieber with a genre-bending sound of R&B, dancehall and some hip-hop/rap.
Collaborating with other artists is something Liam has had a history with; he’s recently been in the studio with Pharrell Williams and teamed up with Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa on the single “You”, to name a few.
As a songwriter, Liam has been quite successful in the past, co-writing most of the chart-topping mega hits on One Direction’s last two albums with bandmate Louis Tomlinson, among others. In fact, Liam explained in an interview with Jason Lipshutz of Billboard, that as 1D were breaking out into their solo work, he fully intended to remain in the songwriting and producing side of the music industry.
“To be honest with you, I wasn’t going to do a solo venture. I was just going to go into songwriting and carry on and do that. But then I was like, ‘You’ve been trying to do this since you were 14 years old. You would be ridiculously stupid to turn down the option to have a deal.’ Coming out of the band, we had some pretty good opportunities around us. I had to do something.”
With the decision to release his own solo work, Liam committed to keeping his fans informed through his Instagram and @LiamPayne Twitter posts, radio interviews and guest appearances. His latest promo was a Liam Payne Instagram take-over story and a live Facebook chats with fans about his album.
The lyric video premiere of “Strip That Down” has already earned nearly 6 million global views in its first week of release giving it a chart placement of No. 1 on Billboard Chart topper of the week (Liam’s Vevo Lyric Video is posted below).
Liam was the featured musical guest on the Graham Norton Show where Graham interviewed Liam about his solo single. Afterwards Liam gave his debut performance of his chart-topping single “Strip That Down”.
